Ubud - Tegalalang

TO-DO Recommendations

  • Visit Tegallalang Rice Terrace - iconic rice fields, lined with restaurants and swings, 20 mins from Ubud centre, go to Tis Cafe whilst here; really nice spot and also has a pool! Or Alas Harum Bali - lots of iconic swings and luwak coffee tastings.

  • Visit Pura Tirta Empul (also called the “Holy Spring Water Temple”) - famous for seeing Hindu’s religious water practices (you can participate if you wish, but takes some time), Sunday is the busiest day (more likely to see locals participating), 30 mins from Ubud centre (very close to Kings Temple).

  • Tegenungan Waterfall - big Jurassic Park style waterfall with a pool that you can swim in below (but don’t swim under the waterfall as sadly tragic accidents have happened here), brand new (manmade) pool and restaurant (beach club vibes) has recently been built here, 25 mins from Ubud centre.

  • Tukad Cepung Waterfall - 1 small waterfall, then waterfall inside cave, accessible down concrete stairs, better to go 9-11 AM as best time for light through cave, (recommend wearing waterproof shoes when in the cave and water goes up to knees in some places), 50 mins from Ubud centre.

  • Pengempu Waterfall - small waterfall, often not busy, 30 mins from Ubud centre (haven’t been here).

  • Tibumana Waterfall - small waterfall with a pool to swim in, 35 mins from Ubud centre (haven’t been here).

  • Visit Gunung Kawi Sebatu Temple - one of the least visited water temples, (not same as Kings Temple but close by), 40 mins from Ubud centre (haven’t been here)

  • Visit Gunung Kawi (Kings Temple) - 11th-century Hindu temple complex, 35 mins from Ubud centre, really beautiful grounds, and some good souvenir stalls.

  • Taman Saraswati Temple (water temple) - next to Starbucks in the centre of Ubud.

  • Ubud Art Market - currently closed but some stalls are still available, good place to get souvenirs, in the centre of Ubud.

  • Puri Saren Agung (Ubud Royal Palace) - traditional dance performance on Saturday evenings 7:30pm (have dinner before as a 1.5 hour show - also check when performances are as could’ve changed, easy to get tickets, people sell them outside even on the day), in the centre of Ubud.

  • Campuhan Ridge Walk - easy ‘hike’, good for sunset, popular with dog walkers, in the centre of Ubud.

  • Visit Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave) - 15 mins from Ubud centre, you can get a guide once you enter the temple complex (their fee = your choice of donation) - so worth doing as you’re taken to the ruins of the Buddhist temple and to the extra ‘secret’ cave temple.

Food & Drinks Recommendations

  • Dharma Coffee & Juice - nice brunch place, best blueberry muffin ever!

  • The Sayan House - one of best restaurants in Bali; Mexican & Japanese food, go at sunset for amazing views, book in advance, separate vegetarian menu too, best veggie sushi ever!

  • CHORA Mediterranean Restaurant & Bar - beautiful space, amazing food, great value for the quality you get, 4 appetisers = PLENTY for a whole meal for 2 people.

  • No Más Bar - cool "dive" bar with amazing cocktails, often has a great live band on a Saturday, the restaurant downstairs is often busy too (but haven’t tried there personally).

  • Murni’s Warung - tasty Indonesian food, originally a street food stall by a lady called Murni in the 70s, now a popular restaurant but still with locals’ prices, big portions.

  • Zest - all plant based, yoga vibes, good for working from.

  • Alchemy - best for vegan breakfast, ‘raw’ restaurant, (haven’t been here but heard good things).

  • Pison - coffee, drinks, food, live music, (haven’t been here but heard good things).

  • Kyoka Japanese Kitchen - nice Japanese food (veggie options) and funky cocktails.

  • Suka Espresso - good for brunch (also in Uluwatu) - can’t book before 6pm and gets very busy on weekend mornings, (haven’t been here but heard good things).
